After eleven years and 285 episodes, it was time for M*A*S*H to roll up its tents and go home. On February 28, 1983, CBS more than 106 million homes tuned in to watch “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen,” the 2½-hour final episode of this iconic show. So many people watched the show, in fact, that some pretty strange stories popping up. The best is the one from New York City. The story goes that everyone waited until the commercial breaks to go to the bathroom, and so many toilets were flushed all at once that the New York City Department of Sanitation report that plumbing systems were breaking down all over New York City.
Interestingly, the final episode, about the end of the Korean war and the members of the M*A*S*H unit saying goodbye to one another, was not the last to be filmed. The second-to-last episode, “As Time Goes By” was filmed after the finale was shot.
